First off...
What is Parkour?
"Parkour is very basically the art of movement where participants (otherwise known as 'Traceurs') use objects within their urban surroundings, to create new and interesting ways of moving. It encompasses running, jumping, vaulting and climbing to overcome these obstacles, where the ultimate aim is to do so in the most fluid and flowing way possible. For people unfamiliar to Parkour, the easiest picture to paint is to say that what we do is the closest you can get to the Matrix, Spiderman and Hong Kong martial arts movies in the sense of movement, without the need for special FX or wires. Get past that mental picture and what you have in front of you is a deep discipline where, as a beginner you'll find yourself practising plenty of singular moves (similar to how skaters practise) but as you become more proficient, you'll find yourself automatically linking things together with the eventual goal coming in the form of one fluid run without any hesitation."

which leads to...
Why?
A question we often hear. Why risk it all just to do that? This inquiry is often proposed on jams and meets by concerned parents and angry authorities. And time after time again we must describe all that we find valuable in the way we move. We want something new, something different, something that allows us to flow, to fly, to bend or break the rules, to challenge ourselves, because it's never been done. But say we slip, we fall, and we bend or break, what if we end up on the concrete? Would it all be worth it? Yes. But how they ask, can an adrenaline rush be worth scars on your back from rolling on the street, cuts on your hands from climbing the bricks, torn ligaments from jumps, or even death from a fall higher than you could take? It is simple, because we are still alive, and as long as we live we will push ourselves. Because life is a one time offer, no refunds, one shot, take your chance, and if we waste our turn this time around and never experience anything then we have no reason to live and no way of going back to try again. If everyday is the same as the last then why bother waking up in the morning? Parkour allows us to feel something, to let us be free to experience life a little bit differently and gives us a reason to wake up, to get out of bed and better ourselves everyday. As a constantly evolving identity, parkour allows us, the traceurs, to change with it, ever growing, ever advancing to a perfection which we shall never reach, and that is what drives us. This sport, this art, this discipline we follow, that we find consuming our thoughts, compelling us to think it, see it, breathe it, wherever we go, has not only become a driving force in our lives, but has given us a way to live our lives, with harmony. Not only with the environment that surrounds us, but the people we meet, and the situations we find ourselves running into. So when they berate us with their ridicule, their unacceptance, their questions, we should take that as an opportunity not to be discouraged, or angry, but instead as an opportunity to share our reasons, to spread the fire. We can open their minds to a new way of thinking like ours once was, to free their minds from the constraints that have been set up around them. We can explain that as long as there is blood in our veins and bones under our skin we will continue. We will not let another day fall to waste, we have all of eternity to rest, as long as we can we will move. So when they ask: "Why?" we can answer: "Because I am here."
